Type of Project: Freelance T-shirt Design | Programs: Adobe Illustrator
Background
In 2019, I started as a color guard instructor at Hempfield Area School District. Color guard has both an outdoor season (marching band) and an indoor winter season (just the color guard). These t-shirt designs were created for their indoor season and for both teams, junior varsity and varsity. Each shirt design correlates with their show concepts and the shirts are purchased by the staff, kids and families in the beginning of the season. This was the first design work that I was asked to freelance. The women in the picture above are the people I teach with.
2019 T-Shirt Design
The middle school team this year show was based on the Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty movies. The flags they had in the show included purple and neon green colors which I used in the t-shirt design. As for the high school team, their show was about having a conversation whether it be with a family member or friend about mental illness, specifically depression. The floor that the kids spun on had a similar design to what I created on the shirt. They also had a lot of red and nude colors within their show that I wanted to represent in the design.
2020 T-Shirt Design
This year started the junior varsity and varsity teams. For the junior varsity, their show was about clocks and the moving parts inside of them. The music included a clock ticking and gears turning, and they had props that were gears. The design for the shirt represents all of those different aspects that the show includes. The orange color of the text was also a color found within their flags. As for the varsity, their show was about nighttime and singing a lullaby, I wanted to capture that by designing a window and spiral of stars that was mesmerizing like a lullaby.
2021 T-Shirt Design
For this year, the junior varsity's show was about being a hero. The most recognized superhero symbol is the diamond shaped one. The color of the design is gold since the ending flags were gold. The varsity's show was about breaking free from one's inner traps and being able to say the word "no" as a female. Due to the feministic nature of the show, I added a female silhouette with a pink undertone since pink is the color for feminism. I also encased the silhouette in a circle to symbolize one stuck in their own trap.
